User-created profiles and content portable across Sky's sites
Sky.com is the Web portal for British Sky Broadcasting, which delivers programming to more than one in three homes across the UK and Ireland. Sky.com is the gateway to such established online brands as Sky Sports and Sky News as well as newer vertical sites like Sky Travel, Sky Showbiz and Sky Motoring. Sky has created a unified social experience across its many sites by letting visitors easily and quickly share content across these sites and by making personas – or user-created profiles – portable.
Social media features have increased unique visitors 17%
The benefits of providing social media across their network of sites have been significant for
Sky. Since the introduction of social media features, they have seen a 17% increase in unique
visitors. Overall page views are also up 33% and page views by community members have risen
by 201%. The revamped Sky site also keeps users coming back for more: returning unique
visitors have increased 28%.
British Sky Broadcasting is a part of everyday life in almost 10 million homes in the UK. The company also offers an extensive network of well-known Web destinations.
To increase visitor engagement, Sky deployed a range of social media features on Sky News, Sky.com, Sky Player, Sky Poker and Sky Save Money & Property. On Sky News, multimedia blogs, discussion boards and user comments let visitors contribute and shape the news agenda. Sky News also hosts a user-generated "citizen journalism" section where visitors can share videos, photos and comments on breaking news events.
